The past decade was characterized by a resurgence in statistical process control techniques and in the use of statistical design of experiments. While some have argued that with proper use of statistical design in the early stages of product and process development, there will be little need for the use of statistical process control, it is the opinion of the authors that both approaches are necessary. Indeed, the most dramatic improvements in variability reduction can be achieved through the use of statistical design of experiments in the development or re-design phases. However, it is our belief that statistical process control will continue to be a critical part of any company's quality activities. Many industrial processes are characterized by dynamic behavior of the process mean, correlated measures and/or the need for rapid, adaptive control. We are aware of several U.S. companies who have practiced statistical design of experiments for 20-30 years and yet continue to see a crucial need for statistical process control in their factories. Statistical process control will continue to be a viable tool in any continuous improvement program.
