The Army is on the verge of a profound improvement in tactical automation. The current systems, represented by the maneuver control system (MCS), are large, unwieldy machines located in command posts and requiring manual input of all data. Future systems, such as the developmental intervehicular information system (IVIS) on M1A2 tanks, are fundamentally different. IVIS is integral to every combat system and capable of automatically or manually entering information. The graphic display of this information greatly improves the leader's view of the battlefield.
