From ancient times to modern art and literature, the Moon is a recurring subject of poetry and artistic representations, the object of scientific inquiries and a crucial destination for science-fiction fantasies. The Moon’s rich history as a resource for the visual arts and literature has long been recognized but its influence is inexhaustible. An international conference held in Genova (12–13 December 2019) celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Program that landed humans on the Moon for the first time on July 1969. Scholars of Classical Studies, Medieval and Renaissance culture, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Music and Visual Arts, joined together to explore and discuss the many different ways that writers, poets, historians, artists, and film makers have tried to capture the nature of our satellite. Their contributions are now gathered in this volume.
