The intention of this volume is to provide an accessible introduction to the Japanese language and natural language processing (NLP) techniques applied to distinctively Japanese tasks, for readers with some familiarity with NLP and linguistics, but little or no familiarity with Japanese. It is intended to both expose the reader to a broad range of linguistic phenomena observed in Japanese, and provide some background into techniques and resources relevant to those phenomena; where possible, it is presented in a theory-neutral manner.
