This is the third in a series of language guides developed and written by state wide committees under the direction of the California State Department of Education. acompanion volume to this guide is "Languag einstruction - perspective and prospectus." Prepared by nelsonbrooks, Charles F. Hockett, and Everett V. O'Rourke, 1963. a1964 survey showed 19 California elementary and secondaryschools and 16 universities and colleges offering courses inchinese, demonstrating the high interest in chinese languagestudies in this state. This guide was written to serve as anaid to supervisors and teachers in organizing and administering beginning chinese language programs based. onthe audiolingual method. Chapters include - value and selection of foreign languages, general principles ofteaching foreign languages, basic principles of teaching mandarin chinese, methodology, the languagelaboratory, and testing and evaluating. Appendices give selected reference lists and outlines of the mandarin chinese sound system, structural patterns, and romanization systems.
