Manual to accompany mathematics for everyday use. Book 1
Toronto: The John C. Winston Co. Limited, 1935. — 146 p.
Before successful work can be done in any grade, the teacher must start with objectives and lay out a plan for instruction. If you will examine several courses of study, you will be impressed by the narrow views on the objectives of education. These objectives are often couched in terms of tradition and sentimentalism. The objectives must be viewed broadly. All the school can do is to sample the experiences of life. The teacher must make certain that the samplings are carefully chosen so that the pupil will make definite progress in accordance with the laws of learning. There can be no static concept of life in the learning process. The objectives need not be remote, but they may be considered as milestones to be reached and passed, only to find other objectives or milestones ahead. Wemust consider the growth of the child.
