Great lives from history. Cumulative indexes
Pasadena, California: Salem Press, 2009. — 605 p.
Salem Press’s Great Lives from History series is a far-reaching view of of the most famous, and infamous, personages of history, in all areas of human endeavor, from the arts through political, religious, and science figures. Established in 2004 with The Ancient World, the series saw completion in 2009 with the final installment, The 20th Century. Each of the eight sets (27 volumes altogether) is arranged alphabetically by name of personage and includes the following finding aids: a Chronological List of Entries, a Category Index, a Geographical Index, a Personage Index, and a comprehensive Subject Index.
Here, for the first time, all of these indexes have been merged to form this one-volume set of the Cumulative Indexes to all 4,474 lives covered. Each of the five indexes from all eight sets has been merged with its fellows from the other sets, and for convenience the Subject and Personage indexes have been combined into one comprehensive Subject and Personages Index. The resulting merged indexes are further organized as follows:
Alphabetical List of Entries: A complete list of all the lives, arranged alphabetically.
Category Index: Lives by category, from Agriculture and Art through Law and Government and Politics to Literature to Medicine, Social Reform, and Women's Rights. Lives within each category are arranged alphabetically. Ample cross-references direct readers to other likely areas of interest.
Chronological List of Entries: A complete list of all the lives, arranged chronologically. Subheads divide the personages covered into date ranges by birth year in order to speed the location of lives by period.
Geographical Index: Lives by geographic locale, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Cross-references direct readers to related locales: Those looking up Russia, for example, will also be directed to the lives listed under Soviet Union.
Subject and Personages Index: Amerging of the subject and personages indexes of all ten sets, this massive index includes persons, concepts, terms, battles, works of literature, inventions, organizations, artworks, musical compositions, and many other topics of discussion. More than 5,000 “see” and “see also” cross-references direct readers to related topics of interest.
In all five indexes, the page numbers for each entry are preceded by a set code indicating to which reference set the entry belongs:
