Lawyers are writers. In your career, you will probably write more than a novelist.1 In this book, you’ll be cast in the role of a new associate learning many basic legal writing tasks. To understand the requirements of each project, you’ll need first to understand the professional responsibilities that apply. In this chapter, we’ll begin with the responsibilities that arise when a client asks you to predict how the law will resolve a problem. We’ll then turn to some suggestions for efficient legal research. Finally, this chapter will introduce you to the legal document new associates most frequently write, the office memorandum.
