Berg Marie L., Kerr Isabel J. The Cuiva Language Grammar
Santa Ana, California: Summer Institute of Linguistics, 1973. — vii + 105 p.
Cuiva or Cuiba (Kuiva, Cuiba-Wámonae, Chiricoa, Hiwi, Maiben, Deja) is a central Guahiban (Guajiboan, Wahívoan, Guahiboan) language that is spoken by about 2,300 people in Colombia and additional 650 in Venezuela. In Colombia, Cuiva is spoken among those who live and who are born surrounding the Colombian rivers Meta, Casanare and Capanapara ‒ i.e. Capanaparo river ‒ (see map at p. vii). The Cuiva ethnic group is often found in the Casanare region. In Venezuela the language is spoken in the state of Apure, one of the state border with Colombia, which is found alongside the Capanaparo river. This description presents the grammatical structure of the Cuiva language, two texts (pp. 53-77), and a lexicon (pp. 78-104). The structural analysis was done according to the tagmemic model by Kenneth L. Pike, a quite sophisticated system, but the description is quite readable.
