The idea of preparing a Dictionary of Roman Law in encyclopedic forin came to my mind soon after my arrival in the United States, as I became more familiar with the status of Roman Law in American schools and legal writing. The idea grew further while I was working with my friend, Professor A. Arthur Schiller of Columbia University School of Law, on a complete bibliography of the Romanistic literature published in English since 1939.
