This text has been written to provide the college student in his freshman or sophomore year with a non-mathematical treatment of introductory astronomy. It was thought necessary in writing the first edition to include a few simple mathematical developments. The mathematics in this edition has been further reduced due to modern improvements in distance determination by the use of lasers and close-up photographs of the moon from orbiting vehicles. Computation of orbits are now made by high-speed electronic computers, too.
