Plasticity and impact dynamics are two important areas of applied mechanics closely related to engineering practice, such as structural engineering, manufacturing engineering, aerospace engineering and materials engineering. The application of engineering plasticity and impact dynamics is inexhaustible and has resulted in significant achievements both technically and economically. This international symposium is specially organised in honour of Professor Tongxi Yu, a pioneer in both the areas, at his 60th birthday to appreciate his outstanding contributions. The proceedings of the symposium contains seventeen chapters written by his former students and those who worked with him at certain stage. The materials presented are in the general fields of plasticity and impact dynamics and demonstrate the latest theoretical development and engineering applications. The volume covers a wide range of topics including bifurcation, metal forming, constitutive modelling, energy absorption, crashworthiness, wave propagation, penetration, fracture, laser impact, microdynamics and erosion induced by particle impingements.
