Abstract. The basic ptiysical processes in electrically stressed gases are outlined and the use of knowledge on such processes to optimize the properties of insulating gases is described. The properties of insulating gases under uniform and nonunilorm cleclric fields and their voltage-time characteristics are briefly discussed. The decomposilion of SF6, and tho toxicity of its dccomposition byproducts are laboratcd upon.
