To describe the true behavior of most real-world systems with sufficient accuracy, engineers have to overcome difficulties arising from their lack of knowledge about parts of a process or from the impossibility to characterizeit with absolute certainty. For example, measured parameters of (dynamical) systems cannot be determined exactly due to non-negligible equipment imprecision. Other sources of such model inaccuracies are order reduction techniques for complex systems used to simplify the design of their components and corresponding control algorithms. Therefore, both aleatory (due to randomness) and epistemological (due to the lack of knowledge) types of uncertainty have to be taken into account while developing techniques for a model-based analysis or synthesis of systems.
