Due to the increasing demand of clean and safe drinking water, numerous alternative technologies for water purification have been developed. Recently, photocatalysis has been widely considered as a promising alternative for water purification due to its potential to use sunlight-driven heterogeneous catalytic disinfection processes with less or even no disinfection by-product (DBP) formation. Under specific light irradiation on the photocatalyst, reactive charged and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) are generated and can cause fatal damages to microorganisms. However, the large-scale photocatalytic disinfection application has not been established.
