Biggins P., Hiltz J., Kusterbeck A. Bio-inspired Materials and Sensing Systems
The Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, UK, 2011. — 165 p. — ISBN: 1849731217
Can scientists and engineers replicate Nature and develop systems that operate in extreme environments? Bio-inspiration is an established concept which is developing to meet the needs of the many challenges we face particularly in defence and security.
Nature only knows transformation’ Anon
The challenges facing societies in the twenty-first century are considerable whether they are from a global warming, environmental pollution, fuel dependency or terrorism perspective. As a result there is a growing requirement for the academic, research and industrial communities to look for innovative ways of addressing these issues. It is against this context that this book not only explores how nature’s paradigms can be applied to defence and security needs but also addresses some of the wider challenges facing society. Bio-inspired Materials and Sensing Systems explores how we can learn from Nature and use this knowledge to provide new approaches to solving some of these challenges. The idea for this book developed from a presentation addressing the theme ‘learning from nature’ presented at the First UK-US Conference on Chemical and Biological Sensors held at the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, UK, in April 2007.
