Excellent instruction in tactics and strategy for novice and average players, giving real insight into common chess principles and motifs. (Not intended to be exhaustive in this.) The history of the development of the Ruy Lopez opening alone is worth the price. The several short stories are clever. Trivia and quotes from masters are always welcome. Plus, numerous annotated short games. Glad I found this nice introduction to both the culture and theory of the game.
