Pariseau W.G. Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics
2nd Ed. — CRC Press Taylor & Francis Group, 2011. — 696 p. — ISBN13: 978-1-4665-1270-2.
This second edition benefits from five years of experience with the first edition and valuable feedback from users of the first edition including students, faculty, and practicing engineers.
This edition differs from the first with the addition of an important chapter on dynamic phenomena including discussion of rock bursts and coal bumps. More examples have been added to each chapter to further illustrate application of design principles and procedures developed in the text and more problems for home study have been added at the end of each of the nine chapters in the text. Several appendices have been expanded; some reduced. All of the text and companion Solution Manual have been edited with the intention of correcting mistakes, although there is no guarantee of perfection. Use of metric and imperial units is continued. The author remains convinced that (1) there are important design problems associated with excavations in rock that can be addressed from a background in mechanics of materials and a basic understanding of stress, strain, elasticity, and strength, and (2) understanding is a prerequisite for responsible use of computer programs intended for excavation design whether for surface or underground excavations.
