The present survey consists of two parts. The first part outlines the objectives and methods in computer studies of phase transitions and critical phenomena. The fundamental problems inherent in a theoretical description of cooperatively behaving many-body systems will be formulated, and it will be described how computer studies can be useful in solving these problems. General principles will be emphasized more than technical details.
