From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Like Shades of Green: The Clash of Agricultural Science and Environmental Science (Facts On File, 1998), this detailed revision discusses the history of and key figures associated with two green revolutions. One consists of the tremendous strides made in agriculture due to the introduction of heartier and more disease-resistant plant varieties, genetically modified crops, pesticide and insecticide advances, and improved cultivation techniques that yield more food products and that hold the promise of feeding the world. The other consists of environmental movements and conservation efforts to ensure a safe living environment and ecological balance. The Kidds also discusses the important preservation and environmental efforts led by several past U.S. presidents, such as Theodore Roosevelt and Richard M. Nixon. This well-balanced reference, which gives both sides of an important debate, is recommended for collections that do not have the earlier book. About a third of the further-reading titles are new to this edition, and Web sites have been added. However, teens may be disappointed by the lackluster black-and-white illustrations, which fail to use the visual beauty and aesthetics of colors in nature, especially the color green.–Caroline Geck, Kean University, Union, NJ
