This publication is the second volume of the series Sound Materials of the Nivkh Language. This time, the authors H. Shiraishi and G Lok have compiled texts of three songs and four folktales of the Amur Dialect of Nivkh.
The former volume, Folktales Recited by V.F. Akiljak- Ivanova (ELPR Publication A2-015), was published in 2002 as a technical report of the ELPR Project, alias The Endangered Languages of the Pacific Rim, Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Priority Areas (A) of the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science, Sport and Culture. It contained recitations of narrator V. F. Akiljak-Ivanova, and was translated into Russian and English. The distinctive characteristic of this publication was, without any doubt, the attached CD which contained all the recitations performed in Nivkh. No one had ever published a Nivkh text with an audio-medium before this publication.
Compared with its Southern-neighbor Ainu, which is also an endangered language, Nivkh has still a number of speakers and therefore the possibility of language revival is greater. In contrast with Ainu, however, Nivkh has less teaching materials, especially audio or visual ones. Taking this fact into consideration, the first volume of this series was a tremendous contribution to fill this gap. No wonder that it received so much compliments from various fields.
